Chapter 19

NODENS UNITE

Glyn took a large straw basket down from the shelf and placed a loaf of her fresh baked bread and a container of her special garden stew into it. She covered the food with a cloth and then put her gardening trowel and pruning shears into the basket on top of the cloth. As she glanced out of the window she could see Willy leaning against the sweet gum tree on the far side of the lane. He was one of the new young Marshals that Friedreich had recruited. He was about Zac’s age.

Willy and Horn shared surveillance duty. They took turns following Glyn. In the beginning they stayed out of sight hoping that she would lead them to Joss. However, their presents soon became obvious and they were forced into the open.

Glyn settled into a routine, every morning she would leave basket in hand and walk up to the high meadow. Once there she would walk several kilometers, stopping every few meters to pinch off a small sprig or dig up a seedling. After an hour or two she would return to her garden and pretend to plant her day’s harvest. After a few such excursions Horn decided that following her wanderings through the meadows was a waste of time and he found a soft spot in the grass on the edge of the meadow an ideal place to nap until she returned. This gave Glyn the opportunity she needed to slip away and be with Joss.

Willy had been more persistent, for the past three days Glyn had led him through the same routine however, he showed no sign of dropping his guard. Glyn was becoming distraught, it had been some time since she had seen Joss and he would be worried.

Glyn headed out the front door into the morning sunshine and straight to Willy. “Hello Marshal, ready for your morning exercise?” she asked.

Willy didn’t answer; Glyn could tell by his bloodshot eyes that he’d spent most of the night in the ale house.

“I’m going up to the high slopes to gather mountain berries. I have to be back early so we will have to jog,” she explained.

Willy looked at Glyn in dismay, his skin was grey and it looked like he was about to vomit.

“If I stay here will you promise that you will just get the berries and come right back,” he groaned.

“I promise, but really Marshal you should stay out of the ale houses you look like death warmed over,” Glyn said.

Willy didn’t reply, he just turned and headed for the trees, he was desperate to find a place to disgorge the contents of his stomach.

Glyn smiled she felt a sense of relief. A whole morning to herself without a Marshal looking over her shoulder. She took her eye glasses out of her pocket and carefully cleaned them with a piece of cotton cloth then she fitted them over her nose. She began to hum to herself as she jogged along the path leading to the mountains.
